We’ve been named a 5-star employer.

As you may already know, By Miles has some of the happiest members in the car insurance industry (hopefully you’re one of them). But it’s not just the people we cover who are smiling…

The Insurance Post just released their Best Insurance Employer list for 2024. Given that you’re reading about it here, you’ve probably already guessed that we’re on it.

But who exactly made that decision? and why?

Says who?

According to the Insurance Post’s article, we’re “part of an elite group of five-star companies”. That sounds very cool. But it sounds even cooler when you know how they came to that conclusion: employee feedback.

The survey took in 2,500 responses from people working in a variety of roles across the sector. Though almost 150 companies were nominated, only 9 achieved that coveted 5-star rating.

Why us?

Rankings were based on how well employers performed in areas, including:

  • Pay and benefits.
  • Training.
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Environment, society and governance.
  • Work-life balance.
  • Support from management.

To secure that full set of five sparkling stars, companies had to score highly in all areas. And we did – getting a whopping 9.78 for work-life balance, while receiving wonderful write ups like this:

“By Miles offers the highest commitment I’ve ever seen to inclusion, diversity and wellbeing, as well as flexible working. They truly walk the walk.”

But what does ‘walking the walk’ actually look like?

It’s a fair question. And the answer’s fair too. That’s to say, it’s all about fairness.

Fairness is, above all, what we look to deliver for our members. And we’ve always believed that wouldn’t be possible unless we could do the same for our people.

With that in mind, we’re fully-committed to:

Flexible working.

In 2020, we went hybrid. What started as a necessity soon became an advantage – especially when it comes to hiring – as Dan our Talent and Culture Lead, explains:

Flexible working hasn’t just been key to building an incredible team. It’s also helped them buy in to our culture and bring their best. To quote some more anonymous feedback:

“By Miles has a real and tangible commitment to flexible working, and promoting a healthy culture in general. Feels good to work here.”

“We are outcome-focussed so […] we trust each other to make decisions for the right reason.”

With this in mind, we take flexibility seriously – offering opportunities for condensed hours alongside hybrid working. This isn’t just us honking our own horn, either. Flexa (who score businesses on the level of flexibility they offer their people) ranks us as the 68th most flexible employer in the entire country

Flexible benefits.

Every single element of your life contributes to your health. So it doesn’t really make sense to put narrow limits on employee benefits. That’s why we partner with Thanks Ben to offer our people fully-flexible benefits (worth £100 a month) that they can spend on anything they feel will improve their wellbeing.

You’ll find a few nice examples of what our people have put those funds toward here.

Supporting health holistically.

As well as the benefits outlined above, we offer access to other resources designed to help us stay physically and mentally well.

We offer private health insurance through Vitality which can mean faster access to a wider range of health services than are otherwise available. On top of this, we offer free, on-demand access to therapy and coaching through our partner, Plumm

Helping people to grow.

Folks are free to spend their Thanks Ben benefits on personal development, but every member of the By Miles team also has access to the LinkedIn Learning platform. So, at any time, they can dive into over 5,000 courses

While these opportunities are great, development isn’t something we feel should simply be outsourced. We’re always looking to share our skills internally, helping people broaden their roles or even move into a new area of the business altogether

Having put all that effort into helping people achieve their potential, it’s no surprise that we want to hold on to them. So we don’t shy away from internal hiring. We’ll always look to progress people we know have the skills and – vitally – the behaviours we value.

As mentioned in this recent IWD piece, we’ve used internal progression to fill a wide range of senior roles, including our Head of Operations, Head of CX, Head of People, Director of Compliance, Head of Product and our CEO (to name a few).

Safe-guarding a culture of respect.

Respect is one of our 5 core values.

Respect is one of the five virtues our culture is built on. It plays a big part in how we work – allowing us to challenge each other with kindness and achieve our best. But it also plays a big part in who we are at work (ourselves!).

At By Miles we’re proud of creating an atmosphere where people are empowered to bring their whole self to work. It creates a sense of openness where people feel able to share their personal perspectives on truly important issues

This emphasis on psychological safety is a big part of the reason we score so well on our frequent engagement surveys. And, as is now well-established, employers that create safe, engaging workplaces tend to perform better financially (who’d have thunk it?).

If you’re interested in joining a smarter, fairer workplace keep an eye on our career page. (And if it just so happens that you’re also a lower mileage driver, go ahead and grab a quote for our smarter, fairer car insurance too).
