We talk about fairness quite a lot. And why wouldn’t we? It’s the whole reason we pioneered our pay-by-mile car insurance: to try and give lower mileage drivers a fairer option.

But fairness is actually only 1 of the 5 virtues that underpin our culture here at By Miles – the others being respect, growth, efficiency and ambition. Every quarter we vote for colleagues who we’ve seen embodying those qualities

The winners not only enjoy eternal glory, but also a £200 bonus and some very fancy, very exclusive parrot-themed swag. (Why parrot themed? It’s a long story. Join us and we’ll give you the low down).

So without further ado, here are our winners so far, as described in anonymous feedback by the folks they work with.

Q1

Carole, Customer Experience Specialist.

“They always make everyone feel included in the team and are always happy to support where needed even if this means they are taking on things that are away from their actual role.”

“They embody the respect and efficiency virtues. They are warm, positive and an excellent all round team player. They are approachable and many people feel comfortable going to them with complicated cases, which they are always happy to lend a keen eye and a helping hand to.”

Emma Mullen, Customer Experience Team Lead.

“This person continues to be a bright light shining in all corners! They are always ready to help and support, have seemingly endless amounts of esoteric knowledge and verve. They are more than just a CX agent and I’m very happy to work with them.”

“I love the approach they take to building a supportive environment across the business, and demonstrating the virtues of growth, respect and ambition. They have done a brilliant job of sharing their experience and customer outcomes.”

Q2

Josh Watts, Customer Experience Team Lead.

“This person treats team members with fairness and respect, whilst never compromising on company values and manages to prioritise the needs of both. They are focused on growth and will always seek to further knowledge to the betterment of the team.”

“They embody all of our virtues through their behaviour. Since joining the CX team they have taken all challenges coming their way as opportunities for growth. They are continuously seeking opportunities to grow professionally and encourage their team to do the same. They are efficient in solving questions for their direct reports, keeping fairness at the heart for team members and customer alike. They demonstrate efficiency by streamlining day to day tasks which avoids double work. Respect is displayed through valuing everyone’s opinions and perspectives, while challenging them with kindness. Their ambition shines through by setting high standards and striving for excellence in their day to day.”

Jon Linnell, Lead Engineer & Manager.

“They’re kind and supportive person to work with. They always treat others with an enormous amount of respect which contributes to a really positive working environment for everyone in the team.”

“Throughout the logistics provider switch work, this person has shown huge levels off efficiency and fairness. They always consider other people’s perspectives and work to ensure the engineering side of the work is completed on time.”

Q3

Laura Holley, Lead Business Intelligence Analyst.

“When it comes to our virtues, this person has them all – a growth mindset demonstrated through her consistent curiosity and question asking, a drive for efficiency and ambition Respect and fairness shines through in every interaction I’ve seen them have with colleagues. On top of all that, they’re our number one games master and resident DJ. Their input is invaluable to By Miles, and I appreciate them so much!”

“This person continues to be an incredible example of what makes By Miles unique and great. Of course, this person, as always brings amazing insight (and fun) to every conversation, as well as an always-on insistence to put data first, give everyone access to it, help people understand it and use it to make fast and correct decisions. But they also continue to go above and beyond every day, their drive to democratise data is one thing but their ‘data school’ which has been created off their own back to help other upskill is remarkable and speaks volumes about this person.”

Jodie Cullum – Pricing & Data Science Lead.

“This person role models our virtues of ambition and growth, both personally and professionally. They continue to constantly challenge themselves and our capabilities as a business, and are pushing us to achieve new things more effectively and efficiently. Always centred on fairness and respect for our members and our people.”

“This person has done a brilliant job this quarter and in fact the whole of this year. They have shown a huge amount of growth and ambition, stepping up to take on a number of responsibilities within the team and the business. They have developed new and more efficient ways of working and signing off changes. They show fairness in everything they do, and are constantly looking for ways to make pricing fairer and more personalised rather than down to judgement or bias. They work brilliantly and collaboratively with the wider team, always showing respect for new ideas and others’ views. They have a huge amount of subject matter expertise, but are also always looking to learn, grow and find ways of improving. Great job!”

Q4

Diana Patrascu, Training & Quality Specialist.

“This person shows fairness and respect in their interactions. They are always approachable and ensure that everyone has an equal voice, especially when making decisions or getting involved in projects. Their efficiency in how they organise team workflows, helps reduce unnecessary stress. They also model growth by seeking out opportunities to develop their own skills and sharing their learnings with the team to support their improvement.

“The virtues of Growth and Ambition are at the core of everything this person does amazingly. They consistently come up with initiatives and improvements to the training we deliver. This person is ambitious in constantly raising the bar regarding sharing knowledge amongst the team to help us provide a top-class service for our members. They are also incredibly respectful and fair when putting forward ideas on improving training or arranging additional training sessions; it’s been awesome working with them.”

Dom Yeomans, Senior Product Manager.

This person exhibits enviable calm in the face of complex and difficult pieces of work. Their domain knowledge is unparalleled, and their willingness to get stuck into almost any problem is highly valued by colleagues. They display respect towards colleagues, constant ambition in the desire to improve our product and member experience, growth in upskilling as needed, fairness in their even-handed approach to handling the teams’ work, and efficiency in laser-focussed prioritisation. It’s no overstatement to say that we would be quite lost without this person.

This person demonstrates efficiency by ensuring the team is always working on the right things, making pragmatic decisions about which features should be prioritised to ensure the best outcomes for our members. They are fair, and supportive of the team that works for him, allowing us time to work on issues and projects alongside delivering new features, showing both Respect for us and Fairness in allowing us a voice in what we should be working on to create the best services for our customers.
